Chrysler CEO Teases Dealers with Possible Jeep Pickup Truck for 2012?

Posted by ScramblerKen on 2010/9/19 6:10:40 (982) reads

ast week at a show for Chrysler dealers in Orlando, Florida, a hybrid Jeep pickup truck was shown (no photos were shown). Of course no confirmation on this being built, but an article in egmCarTech states a Jeep pickup based on the 4-door Unlimited was given the green light and will appear in showrooms 3rd Quarter 2011.

From AutoNews:

Jeep CEO Michael Manley concluded his presentation to dealers by saying: “You never know what might show up in your showroom someday,” according to a person who attended the meeting. Manley then walked off the stage, and the pickup truck appeared.

Manley said nothing about whether Jeep will produce the pickup.

From FourWheeler:

Identical to the Wrangler from the B-pillar forward, the teaser had a small quarter window behind the front door and there will be some storage behind the front seats. Unlike the J8/Sarge this pickup had a true bed with a gap between it and the cab. The Unlimited-based pickup is said to retain the JKs link-coil suspension. In order to maintain pickup proportions and keep a useable bed length, the JK pickup did have an extended rear overhang and like the Gladiator, this concept had the spare tire mounted to the side of the bed.

From PickupTrucks:

Industry sources have told us that production of the Jeep pickup is expected to start in the third quarter of 2011, with the pickup badged as a 2012 model. It’s said to be based on the four-door Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited platform but with a two-door regular cab configuration with extra space behind the front seats for storage.

We have been teased for years on a Jeep Wrangler based pickup for years, but here is hoping they actually will come through. With the Ford Ranger due to end production, this would leave the small pickup truck field open, so who knows. Maybe Jeep sees the opportunity. I also suspect they are waiting to make this a 2012 as the Wrangler is due for a new engine. I doubt we will see a diesel, but then again, you never know...
