Engine Swap

Hi to all!

First of all, sorry for writing in English. My Dutch is not yet good enough  :frusty:

I have a 1989 YJ with a 2.5 engine which runs ok, but since I frequently use the Jeep for long road trips I would like a little more power. I read around that some people perform a complete engine swap.

Could anyone give some advice on which swap would be the best? I'm thinking about finding a 4.0 HO engine, but I'm open to any ideas and suggestions.

I'd also like some info or pointers on how to update the registration papers of the Jeep.

Do you know of any mechanic/garage in NL that can do the job?

Thanks!

Marcello

PS if you want you can reply in Dutch, I should be able to read it.

:bye1:

Welcome,

2.5 to 4.0 is the best swap. You will need a complete engine with wiring harness and injection computer + a few other parts someone else knows better then me what they are. I'm not sure you can hook it up directly to your dashboard either, you might need a dial set from a 4.0 to?? Someone else will answer that one.

As far as the law goes, Dutch law is a bit weird on this. The car needs to get a new technical test. This cannot be done by any garage like a annual MOT but needs to be done by the RDW which issues the official papers for any car in the Netherlands. Be it brand new or imported.

Officially, if you swap the engine for say a 4 cilinder with 40% more power you dont need it. But here is the weird part, they dont check it at the annual MOT and there's a very minute chance that a official will check the engine number and verify what the horsepower output is and compare it to the old. So if you swap your 30 hp 4 cilinder for a 400bhp 4 cilinder, bassically they do not care and do not check.

Since you want to increase the cilinders from 4 to 6 you will need to get through the technical tests and then you get new papers that state the car now has 6 cilinders. At this point they will check how many HP the old engine had and how many the new engine has. If the HP gain stays within that 40% there should not be many problems if you made sure the swap is done safe and neatly. So for example you have 100hp 4 cilinder and swap it for a 140HP 6 cilinder you are bassically ok if the rest of the car is in good condition.

If the new engine has more power they will be looking at other parts to, like, can the brakes handle the extra power and is the rest safe. That's a more strict test, so you will need to make sure that you upgrade the brakes. If your lucky the 2.5 brakes are the same as the 4.0 brakes so you can prove it should be ok. Also if you have done the same modifications as another jeep that had it's engine swapped and they gave the OK for that one, you should be fine to. So find someone that has done the swap already and had it approved and show those papers to the officialls. They can only deny it then if the car is not safe due to old/bad parts.

That's it in a nutshell, there's numerous problems and it also depends alot on the guy that tests your car the day you bring it. Then there is the money issue. It is probably alot cheaper to find a good 6 cilinder YJ or TJ then going through all the trouble of finding a complete engine, having it replaced by a garage (not a difficult swap, but probably costly in time) and have it tested and the papers renewed. That is not a cheap process.

If you have the space and time you could do it yourself and save money, but it will probably still be a money drain and take up alot of time. Offcourse if you really want it go for it but try to keep the costs in check and don't end up with a YJ that is more expensive then a 2nd hand TJ in the same mechanical condition as your YJ after the swap!!

btw do you live in Tilburg by any chance? I think i bought a set of wheels from you a few months back??

If the car is from before 1998 and that is your jeep than the 40% rules does not count. It does not mean that you can put in 500HP because they check your enginenumber and if they think it is not safe than they will send your further on to the RDW in Lelystad and than you are some times in deep shit and will cost you hundreds and hundreds off euro's

Also make sure your car is legal and all numbers match because they will check all those numbers. On your car documents it tells you were your chassisnummer is placed. If that place does not match than your local RDW station will also send you to the RDW in Lelystad and that means diepe stront again.

You must provide a paper or invoice or other document to the RDW that says how you got the engine.

If you do it well and checked the car basics and numbers and the engine swap is ok and done well they will give you a stamp OK on your but.

Keep in mind if you do a engine swap by a garage or car dealer it will cost money and probably it would be cheaper to sell your 2.5 jeep and buy a 4.0 jeep.

Thanks for all the replies!

I know the swap does not make sense from an economical point of view, but this jeep has a very high sentimental value for me so I'm going try anyway :)

From your replies I see that the swap is more complicated than I thought, so what I would need (if it exists) is a garage that could take care of everything for me. That is, I bring in my jeep with the old engine and get it back with the new engine and all the paperwork. Right now money is not a (very) big problem.

Do you know if such a garage exists in the Netherlands?

Thanks!

Marcello

Thank you, thank you all.

Denken jullie svp mee:

Cherokee 4.0 donor met goede motor

Thank you all for your replies. For personal and family reasons I really don't want to get rid of this jeep, so I think it will be worth it to do the engine swap even though I realize it makes no sense from a financial point of view.

I'll contact Siert to know how we can proceed.

Thank you for all your input, you guys are really incredibly helpful!

Marcello
